1970’s (beginnings)
- The Ramones - often sited as the first punk rock band and the influence for all other bands.
- Adam and The Ants - began the transition from rock to punk with their unique look.
- Blitzkreig Bop - Named after a Ramones song, active during the late 70s.
- Buzzcocks - English punk band formed in 1976.
- Cherry Vanilla - Female punk singer, worked in the late 70s.
- The Sex Pistols - British punk rock group who valued anarchy and rebellion against the crown and British state, with songs such as ‘God Save The Queen’ as ironic statements valuing anarchy.
1990’s Rise
- Green Day - Formed in 1987, Green Day saw commercial success in the mid to late 90s, aiding the new pop punk revolution and becoming popular figures representing the pop punk movement.
- The Offspring - Formed in 1984, The Offspring found mainstream success in the 90s during the pop punk revolution with their hit album smash. The band became successful in their music and were a common name to pop punk fans.
- Blink-182 - Formed in 1992, Blink-182 found success in the late 90s until early 2004 when they saw the end of the place of pop punk in mainstream music. Their albums proved successful in the early 2000s as they rose to become pop punk idols.
- New Found Glory - The band formed late into the pop punk movement in 1997 however, as a result of the mainstream success of the genre at the time, succeeded in breaking through into large commercial success.
- Fall Out Boy - Fall Out Boy peaked in the late 1990s and early 200s before drastically losing sales as a consequence of the depletion in pop punk’s popularity. Despite this downfall in the genre, they are seen as one of the most influential bands in the 2013 pop punk resurrection into mainstream music with their new sound.
- Sum 41 - This Canadian band founded in 1996 were elevated into mainstream music in the early 2000s but their success only lasted a small number of years due to the decline in mainstream pop punk.
2013 Revival
- All Time Low- Formed in 2003, this American band found mainstream success in the new rise in mainstream pop punk in the 2010s.
- Avril Lavigne - Despite being a prominent artist in the 1990s and early 2000s, Avril Lavigne managed to change her image and sound slightly to incorporate elements of modern, mainstream pop punk, leading to a rise in success in the 2010s and contributing to the revival of the pop punk genre.
- Sleeping With The Sirens - Formed in 2009, this pop punk band found commercial success in the recent years with their unique sound fitting the new revival of pop punk.
- Pierce The Veil - A recent band beginning in 2007 and finding their mainstream success from 2001, Pierce The Veil appealed to the ears of pop punk fans in the new generation. Their sound is an example of the recent newfound mainstream success of pop punk.
- The Story So Far - a pop punk band founded in 2007 are only beginning to find success in the pop punk world with their 2013 albumWhat you don’t see. This recent success is an indication of the continued success of the musical genre and the future success of pop punk as the decade progresses.
- You Me At six - Found in 2004, You Me At Six rose to commercial success in recent years, contributing largely to the mainstream revival of pop punk.
- Fall Out Boy - After being prominent in the early 2000’s, Fall Out Boy took on a new sound in their 2013 album ‘Save Rock And Roll’ and joined the 2013 revival of the pop punk genre.
